With more than 45 GW of utility-scale PV projects in the pipeline at the beginning of 2021, the US is on track to grow total utility-scale PV capacity to over 100 GW by 2024. Here we will examine the coupling of energy storage with PV by comparing three principle methods: AC-coupled, DC-coupled, and Reverse DC-coupledconfigurations.
What are the advantages of a DC-coupled PV system?
Advantages of the DC-coupled approach include lower installation costs by reducing necessary equipment (one set of inverters, MV switchgear and other balance of plant costs), higher efficiency than AC-coupled systems, and increased PV energy generation — from clipping recapture and low-voltage harvesting.
